Ron’s Story – A Personal Journey of Transformation & Tribute to Dr. Liz Elliott
Dr. Liz Elliott, a pioneer in the field of restorative justice and mentor to those who knew her at North Shore Restorative Justice and beyond, passed away on September 9, 2011. In her recent book, Security with Care, she says, “I learned that the problems were much deeper than a flawed criminal justice system and that our work needed to begin in our relationships with each other and the natural world and, most importantly, with ourselves.” In her final chapter she invites each of us “To Declare Yourself” to values and relationships that build and sustain health communities.
In honour of restorative justice week and to pay tribute to Liz and her legacy, we invited one of her dear ‘brothers’ to speak about his personal journey of transformation. Ron’s story captures the essence of Liz’s profound impact on individuals, communities, and institutions. Although Ron did not partake in a formal restorative justice process like meditation, his journey highlights the transformative nature of relationships and seeking to live our values. Ron’s deep connection to Aboriginal spirituality also provides insight into how restorative approaches can be grounded in this ways of knowing that focus on the importance of interconnection and healing of ourselves, our relationships, and our environments.
We welcome all to be inspired and transformed by this powerful story at our Annual General Meeting, Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 6-9pm. Door open at 5:30 at Tsleil-Waututh Nation Gym. 3010 Sleil Waututh Road, North Vancouver. Light refreshments will be provided and the business portion of the AGM will follow the speaker where highlights of the year will be presented and Directors elected. All are welcome to attend – please invite widely.
