As promised, further details and a link to RSVP have been circulated for the upcoming Lower Mainland Regional Restorative Justice Collaborative meeting on February 25th:
Greetings,
We’re sending out a reminder of the next meeting of the Lower Mainland Regional Restorative Justice Collaborative, which is taking place on Saturday, February 25th from 10am-2pm at CERA Society in Coquitlam. We ask that you please bring your own dinner or snacks.
An exciting addition has been made to our agenda, as follows.
Larry and Cathie from Heartspeak Productions will be showing a rough cut of their new film “RJ is the Law” during the lunch break at the Collaborative meeting. The film is 35 minutes long, and they are looking for some feedback as they are going into the final editing stages. You can find more details below.
Heartspeak Productions has teamed up with Community Justice Initiatives with funding from the Law Foundation of BC, to create an educational video that explores the opportunities that exist within the law for referral to a spectrum of relevant restorative and Aboriginal justice models at various levels of the justice system. The production will demonstrate that:
the goals of sentencing as outlined in section 718 of the Criminal Code of Canada and the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), in many circumstances, can be best served and accomplished by these models and approaches.
Canadian law, policy and legal precedents make clear that there is an obligation to consider restorative and Aboriginal justice approaches at all levels of the system from police diversion through post incarceration.
Significant research and case study examples exist, illustrating that the primary goals of Canadian law, as well as those of the Criminal Justice System, can often best be achieved through restorative applications of Alternative Measures (section 717), Extrajudicial Measures (YCJA), Conditional Sentencing (section742.1), Probation (section 731), Corrections and Conditional Release Act (sections 81 and 84) and the Gladue Decision
Thanks for your attention and supporting the Collaborative. You can RSVP by completing this brief form. We can plan better if you take a minute to fill out the form.
